Town Square House seeks to redevelop the vacant Aldi supermarket and adjoining car park, as well as rejuvenate the Town Square on the High Street in Hythe.
The proposed mixed-use development of residential and retail properties sits between the High Street, Bank Street, Mount Street Mews and Prospect Road.
In recognition of Hythe’s reputation as a centre for family-owned businesses and independent retailers, especially on the High Street, these proposals include:
7 new retail units, with a range of sizes to accommodate the needs of independent retailers or healthcare services.
The refurbishment of Town Square offers the opportunity for community events and a place for residents to meet in the centre of Hythe. The proposals to enhance this public area include more seating with landscaping, including tree planting, lighting and a retiled square retaining and enhancing important existing town centre features, plus the addition of bike stands.
Town Square House will create a new frontage to Bank Street and enhance the visitor experience. Redeveloping the existing building will create:
35one- two- and three-bed apartments, plus three affordable apartments, around a communal garden space, and would include a new residential three-storey block to the south. The two proposed residential blocks of apartments will keep to the existing height of the Aldi building and enjoy large vertical balconies to provide amenity areas for the residents. The parking has been redesigned with:
42 spaces provided for the public, alongside:
28 private parking spaces for residents, with:
20 electric vehicle charging points.
1 Town Square – the former Aldi building being refurbished to the north of the site
Town House – the new 3-storey residential block to the south
Town Square Gardens – the proposed private amenity area inside the old Aldi building for the use of the residents
Town Square Walk – a pedestrian link crossing through the old Aldi building and connect new residential building and car parking to the enhanced Town Square to the north
Town House and 1 Town Square are located against the western edge of the site. These would be rectangular buildings rising to a height of three storeys, clad in brick, with regularly arranged windows, and projecting balconies set within zinc-clad frames.
